The elderly seem to have boring hobbies. Sitting down, needles in hand, stitching away to create a hat for you that is probably oversized anyway. However, while these hobbies may not be physically exciting, they positively influence your brain! But how? Overall, learning new things, enhances your cognitive function as well as your memory.
Crocheting has been found as a great source of stress management. People tend to be more happy relaxed, and have a sense of calmness in the mind. Some choose crocheting as a hobby to have an overall sense of accomplishment. Humans tend to seek accomplishment because it boosts their self esteem and self worth, and also increases the dopamine in the brain!

Knitting has been proven to improve concentration and attention spans, something that has been fried in our heads since the social media revolution. Knitters tend to have better problem solving skills and process their thoughts more productively. However, the benefits for knitting go a very long long way. The bilateral movements helps process the difficult events of each day too!

You would get the same levels of happiness if you garden than if you do other socially-accepted leisure activities such as going out! The bird noises you hear during bird watching reduce depression, and clay art is also found to reduce anxiety!

So next time you feel mentally overwhelmed, try one of these activities. It may not mean you are physically old, on the contrary, it helps you to be mentally young!
