Focus is Key

Summer is on its way, but don't check out yet! Exams are coming up and it's your time to shine and show what you learned in the last semester. Staying focused during this last bit of school can be challenging but there are many ways to center yourself on success. Being focused is the gateway to all thinking. It influences your learning, memory, reasoning, and decision-making. Without focus, you cannot think. You can keep yourself focused by becoming goal orientation, reducing multitasking, and taking breaks.

Prioritizing yourself and becoming goal orientated is the best way to keep yourself focused on a specific task. Starting with small goals for big tasks makes it attainable for overthinkers and procrastinators. To become prioritizer, you can write things down in a list. For example, if your overall goal is to clean your desk, create a list with smaller tasks, such as going drawer by drawer as you lead up to the whole desk. Breaking large jobs into smaller pieces allows your brain to not get overwhelmed and abandon the task.

Many people may think that multitasking benefits them because it allows for more to get more done. However, if you finish multiple tasks at once, you'll never learn from them. When studying for multiple exams, don't mix all the subjects together and hope for the best. You should break each subject down into specific areas to study. Once you focus on one thing at a time, you will find that it's easier to complete these tasks because you're not worried about the next thing.

The most important thing in staying focused is taking breaks. If you are not able to take breaks, then you're going to feel overwhelmed and that everything is too much. These breaks come after you follow the previous step of goal orientation. If you know you have planned out your study session, then you're going to feel that you can take a break without feeling guilty. Taking a break can include going outside for a walk or cooking something. This will allow your brain to receive oxygen and release its adrenaline from your tasks.

Since it is exam season and many are studying and preparing, being goal oriented and prioritized can help you take breaks without feeling any guilt. Becoming a prioritizer instead of a procrastinator can help with almost anything in life!
