Pop Culture Poets

When a musical artist, or actor becomes big enough, you can be assured that a book deal is soon to follow. Normally this book deal would revolve around some overly self serving biography, but in the cases of Halsey, Lana Del Rey, and Lili Reinhart, that is not the case. These three strong women of the spotlight have brought forth to us their lives and feelings on a silver platter with books of Poetry and Verse!

Lili Rienhart’s Swimming Lessons is the book of poetry that is probably the most familiar to look at the pages of. The poetry is similar to most poetry books you would pick up by burgeoning social media poets. Her poems are highly emotive, and feel as though getting her thoughts onto the page is what allows her to invest herself in acting, and be unburdened by her own pressures. With illustrations by Curt Montgomery littered throughout the book, adding image to imagery, Swimming Lessons is the perfect book of bite size prose with massive feeling for anyone coming of age.

Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass, is as artistic as it sounds. The aesthetic of the book does a great job of capturing that Lana Del Rey sound. The pages are a dulled yellow and look to have been typed on an old typewriter instead of a computer. The flow of the poetry is emboldened by old photographs, quotes, and illustrations. The poems manage to feel both too heavy and light enough to float away. Both brand new, and straight out of the 60’s at the same time. If you are a fan of her vampy music style, you do not want to miss out on her book of poetry.

Halsey’s I Would Leave Me If I Could is the collection that struck me as the collection that most resembled a professional poet’s printed collection. Her poetry is by far the most structured and professionally formed of the three styles. Halsey’s poems are self reflective and biographical. They are honest portrayals of the highs and lows as they have come to her in her life. She is generous with her woods, and many of her poems leave you feeling warm with notes of romance.
