Middle School: Tales of an 8th Grader

People have said that middle school was the worst time of their life. I agree, middle school is tough, but it's fun too. Now that I am in 8th grade, I have learned my way around and understand the middle school world. Here are some of the things I have learned over the last three years. Join me as I explore being an 8th grader and let’s see what happens next!

Looks

Middle school is an awkward time. It is full of acne, braces, voice cracks, and puberty. You start to wonder, “What the heck is happening to me?” Three days ago these cruel things were not on my face. That’s right, I’m talking about pimples. These little creatures pop up at the worst times. Going to the movies with friends, here comes a pimple. Your crush asks you to hang out, there is another pimple. Picture day, you guessed it, another pimple. Pimples put us all on the same level. I think we can all agree, that PIMPLES SUCK!

Style

Your style changes so much from elementary school to middle school. In elementary school, you could dress like you didn’t have a care in the world. In middle school, your clothes matter. Your style is determined by your group or maybe your group is determined by your style. Either way, style and status go hand and hand. Emo? You probably wear a lot of black clothing. Drip? Designer labels, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Micheal Kors, Nike, and Adidas are big. Not to mention jewelry. I will quote my friend the Migos, “Came through drippin’ (drip drip), Came through drippin’ (drip drip), Came through drippin’ (drip, drip) diamonds on my wrist, they drippin’ (ice).” Athletes? Sweats, leggings, t-shirts, Jordans, Lebrons, or Currys. They always look ready for a game.

Schoolwork

Math is HARD! You have to remember what you learned last year before you can learn anything new. If you don’t remember, you can forget about it. You are lost! Teachers expect you to remember, so they don’t have to spend much time re-teaching. Can you say parent-teacher conference? I have been there, and don’t plan on going there again.

Sport

I have played both basketball and softball for my school. It can be tough to balance school work and practice. We practice almost every day during the season. Then you have to come home, eat, do homework and go straight to bed. During the season, you don’t have much time for a social life. My advice: make friends with your teammates.

Friends

Friendships change in middle school Some of your best elementary school friends may not be your friends at all in middle school. In fact, they may be your worst enemies. Watch out for fake friends! Fake friends are people that will smile to your face but talk about you behind your back. If you are lucky you will find your people. You’ve heard that birds of a feather flock together. Well, this is your flock. They have your back, help you when no one else will, and tell you the truth even if it hurts. These birds help you learn to fly. Get yo’ wings, Sis!
