By now most of us have heard of Gorilla Glue Girl, but in case you haven't, let me catch you up. A woman was recently on TikTok asking for help after she accidentally used Gorilla Glue spray adhesive instead of hair spray. She tried washing it, but her hair would not move and the adhesive wouldn't come off. She eventually went to the hospital for treatment, spending 22 hours in the Emergency Room. While the doctors were able to somewhat help her, she had to cut off her hair, and her scalp still burns from the ordeal.
Many people on the internet have found his hysterical, but there were plenty of people who really felt for her and this awful situation she had found herself in. Many wonder how someone could make such a mistake, but it is easy to forget how much pressure is put on us to look our best at all times. Personally, I'm not one to judge because you never know what is really going on. It's very possible she mistook the product for a hair product or that she didn't know the Gorilla Glue is known as being one of the strongest adhesives out there. And as someone who has had a not so great beauty mishap, I felt for her.
I don't often share this story as it was an embarrassing one, but I once burned some of my hair off.
It was my 21st birthday, and here I was, minding my own business, working on my cowlick at the back of my head when suddenly there was this horrendous stench. My head had been pointing down, so when I looked up all I saw was this little nub of hair sticking straight up from my head, about one inch high. My hair dryer had somehow malfunctioned and burned my hair off! Naturally, I had a mild panic attack! But I had school later that morning, so I threw my hair in a messy bun, called my hairdresser for an asap appointment, and headed to class. The next day my hairdresser took a look at the mess that was my head. There was nothing she could do.
The hair was gone, and to my luck another chunk had burned completely to my scalp. I'm lucky I wasn't injured! She cut the burnt pieces off the ends of the hair that remained and sent me on my way. All I could do for the next eight months was wear my hair up (something I almost never do in public) and hope that this hid my stump.
I'm lucky that my mistake was an easily corrected one that I could hide from other, but I understand Gorilla Glue Girl going public to reach out for help. While no one but doctors could help her in the end, being open about her issue could have led to a solution. Plus, we can all learn from her mistake - always make sure you are using a product you know and trust!
In the end, whenever anyone has a public beauty issue, especially when it comes to hair, I am 100% on their team. Whether it be Gorilla Glue Girl, the girl who burned off her hair with a curling iron, or the next hair disaster to hit the internet.
