Beyond Canon - The Story Behind Fanfictions

We all have that one moment whenever we watch a show when we go, "Hey, those characters would be really adorable together, right?" Oftentimes, however, they don't get together, much to our dismay. One of my favorite methods to cope with these situations is to read and write fanfictions, stories in which everything works out the way we want it to (trust me, as an avid byler shipper who was severely disappointed at the Stranger Things series finale, this really helped me get through the heartbreak).

While fanfiction can be traditionally be dated to the 19th century, modern fanfictions began its ascension to popularity with the ones made for Star Trek. Fans of this show started to create fanfictions and started distributing them through mail after the show got cancelled, ultimately creating a foundation for the stories we know and love today.

Certain fanfictions have gotten popular, and I mean really popular. The 50 Shades of Grey series by E.L. James was originally a fanfiction based off Twilight. Today, it has over 150 million copies sold, just 10 million shy of its inspiration, and even has a whole movie franchise! After by Anna Todd (a fanfiction about Harry Styles) underwent the same treatment. It's currently the most read story on Wattpad, a fanfiction publishing site, racking over 1 billion reads across its four stories, and also has been made into three movies.

So, if you are craving justice and validity over your favorite ship after it wasn't meant to be, or are simply curious to try a new category of writing, fanfictions are a great place to start. If you need to find solace with people, fanfictions are also a great way for communities to get together and share ideas and works with each other. Who knows, if you get into writing them, maybe your story about a story could take off and become three different movies!
