You’ve been stuck in a death prison for ten years. You’re not even guilty.

Did I get you? Because it certainly got me hooked.

The premise of this story is that the main character, Kiva, has spent almost her whole life in Zalindov, the notorious death prison housing the worst prisoners from the surrounding kingdoms. Kiva’s father was thought to be conspiring with rebels and was imprisoned along with his seven year old daughter, where he became the “prison healer”, and eventually died. Kiva stepped up to the prison healer job and stayed alive for ten years, taking care of prisoners as best she could until the famed “rebel queen” landed in Zalindov. Then everything spiraled into chaos (which will not be further explained because SPOILERS).

Anyways, this book has ALL THE THINGS. Given that it takes place in a prison, it’s not really like a lot of other books in the fantasy genre. But it does have magic, kingdoms, and a side romance subplot that’s super well done. It has a pretty linear plot with a series of challenges that slowly escalate as time goes on. There’s also a massive (and I do mean massive) cliff-hanger-plot-twist at the end of book one. Books two and three are also just amazing, with a packed plot and lots of character development!

I hope you think about reading the Prison Healer series (and not just so there’s more fanart- but that’s important too) and enjoy it as much as I did!
