Understanding Third Places

Third places, a.k.a. Third spaces. The second phrase is becoming increasingly popular all over TikTok, with people saying that third spaces are necessary. But what are third places? Well, the definition of a third place is, “a social environment separate from your home (the "first space") and your workplace or school (the "second space"),” according to sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his book "The Great Good Place". In summary, a third space is somewhere you can go away from your daily or normal places like your home and work/school. Now that we know what they are, let's explore why they are important and look at some examples!

Third spaces are important because they give people a place to spend time outside of home and work or school. These places make it easier for people to meet others, have conversations, and build friendships in a relaxed environment. Spending time in these spaces helps people feel like they are part of their community and encourages stronger relationships. Third spaces also bring together people from different backgrounds, allowing them to share ideas, support one another, and create stronger connections.

Despite third spaces being so beneficial and enjoyable, they are slowly dying out. There are two main reasons for this. One is the increase in people staying at home. New shows, movies, and videos online give people things to do at home. It is becoming increasingly popular to stay inside and watch something instead of going outside. Furthermore, social media is giving people more ideas of things to do at home, such as challenges, crafts, and DIY projects. This isn’t inherently a bad thing; it’s simply a reason third spaces are declining. The other big reason is the decrease in affordability in third spaces. Malls, cafes, stores, and other commercial third spaces are becoming too expensive for people to visit regularly. There are cheaper alternatives online, so people tend to stay home.

Although third spaces are declining, there are still fun and affordable third spaces you can visit! Public libraries, parks, community centers,  recreation centers, places of worship, farmers' markets, walking trails, public plazas, and community gardens are just some ideas! Other examples of third spaces include cafes, malls, movie theaters, museums, art galleries, bowling alleys, arcades, and local events! Even if these aren’t free, they can still be enjoyable. It’s not always about the place, it’s also what you do there. So, if you're discouraged from going somewhere because of the price, try to think of a way you could make it fun without paying a lot! Overall, third spaces are very beneficial and everyone can benefit from using them. Try to go out and explore third spaces around you!
